While the direct military destruction inside the capital is limited compared to front-line fighting, the strategic, psychological and economic implications are vast.

Rather than striking random civilian areas, Ukraine targets infrastructure that funds or coordinates Russia’s war machine.

Ukraine’s attacking aims:

Triggering a fuel crisis: June 2026 strikes on the Moscow Oil Refinery – which supplies 40% of the capital’s gasoline – and other energy infrastructure have knocked offline roughly a third of Russia’s refining capacity. This has plunged over half of Russia’s regions into a severe summer fuel crisis.

Blinding military communications: Recent strikes targeting the Dubna Space Communications Center aim to disrupt the radar and satellite intelligence Russia uses to coordinate troop movements in occupied Ukraine.

Stretching air defenses: Forcing Russia to concentrate its heavy air defense grids around Moscow leaves front-line military bases, border regions and supply depots highly vulnerable.

Psychological pressure to break the illusion of safety: For years, the Kremlin maintained a domestic narrative that the “special military operation” was a distant event that would not impact everyday life in major Russian cities.

An unignorable reality: Apocalyptic sights like the “black rain” of oily residue coating Moscow suburbs after the refinery strike have made the conflict impossible for Moscow residents to ignore.

Surging anti-war sentiments: A massive 235% surge in domestic anti-war discussions across Russian online spaces following the massive June drone barrages. Residents are increasingly voicing fears regarding mobilization, fuel shortages and the reality that they are no longer insulated from the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has explicitly called these long-range operations “compelling actions” designed to pressure Putin.

By proving that Ukraine can regularly bypass Russia’s most heavily guarded airspace, Kyiv is sending a clear signal to Russia’s political and business elites that the cost of continuing the war will only escalate.

The attacks serve as a message to both Moscow and international allies that Ukraine is capable of aggressive, asymmetric warfare and intends to leverage these deep strikes to force Russia to the negotiating table on more equitable terms.

[14,11

post-18159","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","category-questions-answers
["GET
