Roughly two and a half hours later, while over Saudi airspace near the Jordanian border, chaos erupted in the cockpit.

According to official accounts and passenger reports, the Omani first officer (later identified in reports as Hamam al-Hammami) assaulted the Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, using a crash axe (some early accounts mentioned a knife or stabbing). The attacker reportedly tried to seize the flight controls in what UAE authorities later described as an attempt to carry out a terrorist act and crash the plane.

Captain Machchhar was seriously injured and bleeding but managed to open the reinforced cockpit door, allowing help to enter. Passengers near the front heard the sounds of a violent struggle. Several people, including Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayoun (a plumber), rushed in. Hayoun later described grabbing the attacker in a chokehold, dragging him out, then returning to help pull back on the control yokes. Other passengers and off-duty FlyDubai pilots who were traveling as passengers (deadheading for a return flight) also intervened, restraining the first officer – some accounts mention using headphone cords to bind him – and providing first aid.

While the fight raged, the aircraft plunged dramatically. Flight-tracking data showed it lost roughly 14,000-18,000 feet in under two minutes (one report cited about 17,400 feet in 92 seconds), reaching a steep nose-down attitude of around 39 degrees – far steeper than a normal descent. Speeds spiked toward Mach 0.96 (near the speed of sound; commercial jets normally cruise well below Mach 0.82), generating extreme G-forces (estimated around 3G during recovery) and airframe stress. A large portion of the rudder broke off from the damage. [ G-force measures acceleration relative to Earth’s gravity, making a human’s body feel multiples heavier during rapid turns, climbs or dives. ]

The plane transmitted emergency transponder codes: first 7700 (general emergency), then briefly 7500 (unlawful interference/hijacking), before returning to 7700. This triggered a major response – Israel scrambled fighter jets amid initial fears of a hijacking. The aircraft leveled off around 15,000 feet, with altitude and speed oscillating as control was regained, then diverted safely to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia, landing around 09:45 local time. All passengers and most crew were unharmed; the two pilots were hospitalized.

Passengers described pure terror – “I thought I was going to die” – followed by relief and celebration upon landing. Saudi authorities provided medical care, food and support. Replacement aircraft later flew the passengers onward to Israel that evening; the original plane was badly damaged and may never fly again.

Captain Machchhar has been widely praised as a hero for his courage under extreme injury – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called his actions valorous for saving hundreds of lives, and Israeli leaders also honored him. UAE authorities launched a formal investigation into motives (still not fully public as of early October reports), any possible external links, and security protocols. FlyDubai suspended Dubai – Tel Aviv flights amid the fallout.

The episode stands out for the razor-thin margins: extreme aerodynamic stress that nearly destroyed the airframe, passenger and crew intervention that turned the tide, and the fact that everyone walked away. It remains under active investigation by UAE prosecutors and regional authorities.

[15,11

post-19926","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-law-and-order","category-questions-answers
["GET
