The Freya is a Ukrainian-led anti-ballistic missile defense project designed as a cost-effective, rapidly deployable alternative to the U.S. Patriot system. Initiated by the Kyiv-based defense company Fire Point, Freya functions as an open-architecture “system of systems,” intended to intercept fast-moving ballistic threats like Russia’s Iskander missiles.
Rather than building an entirely new system from scratch, the Freya project integrates a mix of Ukrainian-made hardware and advanced Western systems to create an effective, layered air defense.

The primary driver behind Freya is economic asymmetry. While a single U.S. Patriot PAC-3 interceptor can cost upwards of $3.8 million, a successful Freya interceptor shot is projected to cost roughly $700,000 to $900,000.
Freya allows Ukraine to build and scale its missile defense without waiting months or years for bureaucratic external approvals and stretched global supply chains.
The program has evolved into a wider European cooperative effort. Alongside Fire Point, companies like Diehl Defence and Thales are contributing, and a coalition of European nations is backing the fast-tracked development of the project.
The project successfully completed early flight tests of the FP-7.X interceptor. Developers aim to begin production and have the Freya system fully operational for its first live ballistic missile interception.
